The writing is good, the main character is bone stupid. From the very start an entire town is gas lighting him and he's just too stupid to pick up on it. The idea someone this oblivious to reality could be a federal agent, or tie his shoes without help even makes the entire story more a farce than a serious detective fantasy. I was willing to go along with the premise in the beginning, he's getting his bearing, OK I can deal with that, but then he never stop being stupid and missing the most obvious things. If you want a story about Chris Farley federal agent, this is your book. If you want Barney Fife, well keep moving cause the main character in this book makes Barney Fife look like Einstein. I love mystery and Sci fi and thought this book would be a good fit. I was not expecting to dislike such an overwhelmingly popular read.I caught on pretty quick that the pines was unsafe and Ethan needed to get out of there, so it was frustrating for me to read chapter after chapter of him staying before he finally caught on and tried to escape.I also tired of reading about him taking beating after beating before actually fighting back.This guy's supposed to be a secret service agent and he's a total pushover.I won't be reading the rest of this trilogy.
