Surrender (Harris Brothers Book 4) by Amy Daws is a friends to lovers, contemporary, sports romance told in dual POV. Unlike the previous books, each featuring a different brother which can be read as standalones, Gareth's story is a duet. Surrender is part one.Famous, British footballer, Gareth, lives a very regimented life. Always in control, he never gets to just let go. Having assumed the responsibilities of raising his younger siblings at eight years old when his mother passed, it was a necessity to be in control in order to hold the family together after his father fell apart. Gareth's disciplined lifestyle helped make him a great athlete, securing him a starting position with Manchester United at a young age, and eventually earning him the role of team captain.American fashion stylist, Sloan, has been living in London with her husband and daughter. She first met Gareth working at a photo shoot where she impressed him by instinctively understanding his texture sensitivity. As a result, he hired her to be his personal shopper. A couple years have passed, and Sloan has recently gone through a nasty divorce resulting in 50/50 shared custody. She feels completely out of control.As Gareth has the need to let go, and Sloan has the need for control, they enter into a sexual relationship with each other that fulfils these needs. It's a friends with benefits arrangement meant to be purely sexual, but of course, things don't always work out the way they are planned. Feelings have a way of complicating even the simplest plans.I'm a big fan of the Harris Brothers books and really looked forward to Gareth's story. I was a little disappointed because this book just didn't grab me in the same way the others did and it took longer for me to become invested in the characters. That being said, I still enjoyed it overall. I thought it was a good start. It ended with quite the cliffhanger, which was expected as part one of a duet. Luckily, I already had part two and was able to jump in right away. To say that I have been anxiously awaiting Gareth Harris' story would truly be an understatement. From the moment I met these four overbearing brothers of Vi Harris in That One Moment, I knew Gareth Harris was the broody type and I knew he was the brother I wanted to read most. To say that I am a lover of this author's writing, it too is an understatement. I first began reading this author with The London Lover's series and although I didn't love some of her beginning stories, I loved her characters and she truly sucked me in that I had to read the next book and the next couple in the series, until That One Moment where this author's writing truly evolved to a point of absolutely moving me with Vi and Hayden's story that still today, two years later, that story still stays with me and I could read (and listen to it) over and over again.The Harris Brother's series truly is one of those series that you can't help feel that you are part of this family. We get to see them at their best but also their worst. We see these brothers at their happiest times but also at their moments of sorrow and weakness. And Surrender is no different. We truly and finally get inside of Gareth's head. As we got to see Camden's, Tanner's and Booker's stories, we got to see and know their brothers but we have never gotten to see who Gareth really was other than the older brooding brother. But all that changes now and I couldn't be more excited with where this story is gone.I absolutely love what this author has done with Gareth's and Sloan's story and the dynamic she has built in this first book of Gareth's duet. Gareth has always been the one in control while Sloan has always been the one to have no control of her life and when these two come together that all changes. I love what the author did with their story, it took me by surprise but it was different and fresh and I loved it and in doing so we got to see a different side of both characters and got to see these two soles be free together, free from their regular life and all the stresses that came with it.From the moment these two originally meet, the spark is there and you instantly feel it so when they finally come together, it's totally off the charts HOT HOT HOT! But one thing I love about this author is that even though her Harris Brothers love to have lots of intimate time with their women in their story, it's not a story of intimate scene after intimate scene with little story, And Gareth and Sloan's story is no different. These two have a very healthy intimate appetite for each other, we can feel it and we see some of it, but we see so much more going on with these two and we see so much happening between them, things they can't see themselves.The Harris brother's series has been one of some heartache but a ton of laughs. We still get the laughs of the crazy Harris brothers but Gareth's story is deeper and more serious. There is a lot from the past that Gareth has not dealt with, he was the oldest, left to take care of his sick and dying mother when his father couldn't handle his wife dying. Gareth was also the one closest to his mom and in her absence and the absence of his father acting like a dad, he was left to help raise his siblings, he became old before his time, never truly getting to enjoy his childhood. There is so much emotion happening in this story and several times I must say I found myself choked up, especially when listening to the audio. And I must say this author totally rocks when it comes to emotional story lines and she nailed Gareth's story.Overall this was a fabulous 5 star read for me and even though this one left me on the edge of my seat with my jaw on the floor, I can't wait to see where the author will take us in the second half of Gareth and Sloan's story. I don't this roller coaster ride is ready to end just yet or any time soon, we just did that great big drop decent into an upside loop, with lots more ups and down waiting ahead for us.
